At Home with Siobhan Doherty from @home__stead

We are thrilled to catch up with Siobhan from @home__stead . Siobhan has effortlessly transformed her Edinburgh period town house into a haven where she lives with her three daughters and husband.
Siobhan's home is a muted, yet warming palette - she has a particular eye for tones, colours and schemes crafted during her time at Farrow & Ball. Siobhan is now a free lance colour consultant and will help you transform your home into a haven.

Siobhan says 'I work as a colour consultant. I give my clients the confidence to create an easy-to-follow scheme that flows between the rooms, taking the stress out of choosing colours and finishes.  I also have an advisory service on how to bring colour in using furniture, soft furnishings, accessories, flooring etc'

We can't wait to hear more about her beautiful home transformation -

1. Tell us about your home and what makes it personal to you.

Myself & my husband were brought up in Ireland in houses built in the 80’s, so we didn’t experience the character of an older building until we moved to Edinburgh 10 years ago.

My job as a colour consultant for Farrow & Ball brought me into some incredible properties so when we first got on the property ladder we were determined to buy a period property.

We bought our first family home, a victorian terraced fixer upper in Edinburgh in 2017 & we have been renovating it ourselves since. It has been and still is a labour of love! We have spend the past 5years reinstating mantlepieces, striping back floorboards, exposing original tiles etc. determined to bring the house back to its former glory.

2. How would you describe your interior style?

I am greatly influenced by Scandinavian design. I love classic Scandinavian furniture with elements of old furniture.

I am happiest when rummaging around at a salvage yard or a charity shop! I love finding individual pieces and being a bit unique.

3. Do you have a favourite room? What makes it special?

My favourite room in our house is the living room. It is the largest room in the house & it is the space with the most character. We have a beautiful panelled bay window, an Edinburgh press & the original ornate cornicing & architrave etc.

We recently got a beautiful new sofa from Arlo & Jacob in a rust coloured linen and it is the perfect accent colour for the room. The colours & fabric choices in here make it feel like a very relaxing space. Soft lighting dotted around the room brings in warmth. It is a very versatile room & probably the most used space by the whole family, be it watching a movie, playing with board games or reading a book. We are normally found in here.

 4. What one piece of design/styling advice would you give?

Prepare your room just like you would do yourself before going out in the cold by layering with warmth.

You can achieve this with soft furnishings e.g a sheepskin rug over an armchair, some scatter cushions on the sofa, cosy throws etc.

But you can also layer with furniture! If you put a sofa against a bare wall it might feel a bit drab. But if you layer the wall with a sideboard behind the sofa & add some side lighting for ambience it will create a calm, cosy and warm space that you want to stay in.

5. What piece from Jord home do you have your eye on?

I love a sheepskin rug, especially in the winter months. It adds so much warmth to a space. This one in oyster caught my eye.
